Description

Our Refractive Index (RI) Liquid (nD = 1.580) is a high-precision optical standard formulated for accuracy, consistency, and stability in laboratory environments. Designed for use in refractometry, microscopy, optical engineering, and gemmology, this liquid provides a reliable, calibrated baseline for immersion and optical coupling applications.

Key Applications

  • Microscopy & Immersion: Improves resolution and eliminates optical distortion when viewing specimens with matching refractive indices.

  • Gemmology: Helps identify and distinguish gemstones, minerals, and synthetic materials via line-of-sight and immersion refractometry.

  • Optical Component Testing: Ideal for optical coupling, light transmission testing, and index matching between lenses, prisms, and glass substrates.

  • Material Identification: Assists in quality control and forensic analysis by matching unknown transparent solids with precise liquid standards.

Technical Specifications

  • Refractive Index (nD): 1.580 ± 0.0005 (at 20°C, 589.3 nm)

  • Temperature Coefficient: Typically -0.0004 to -0.0005°C

  • Appearance: Clear, colourless to pale straw liquid

  • Stability: Shelf-stable when stored in tightly sealed containers away from direct light and excessive heat

  • Packaging Options: Available in 7.4 ml and 30 ml dropper bottles or bulk quantities upon request.

Because RI liquids usually have a limited shelf life, we don’t keep large quantities of bigger volumes in stock, but we’re always happy to arrange it for you when needed.
